Singin’ In The Rain – A Night of Splashing Delight!

Last Friday evening, the hubs and I had a Splashing good date night going to the Gala Opening of Singin’ In The Rain at the MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands. And yes, it was really Raining Live on Stage!

Good Theatre Make for Great Date Nights and wonderful memories! 🙂

Based on the classic 1952 MGM movie, made famous by Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds, the story is set in 1927 when the era of the silent movies was coming to an end with the transition to ‘talking movies’.

Singin' In The Rain

Monumental Pictures: We’re making movies with actors that actually talk!

Monumental Pictures’ 2 hottest stars, talented Don Lockwood (DUANNE ALEXANDER) and Lina Lamont (TARYN- LEE HUDSON), must find a way to survive and reaffirm their stardom now that their adoring public will hear their voices for the very first time on the silver screen. With 4 Olivier Award Nominations and a sell-out West End Season, this acclaimed musical is finally here to delight us in Singapore.
Singin' In The Rain
Although, I can hum the tune and sing the lyrics of the title song and vaguely remember the classic scene of a man hanging onto a lamp post and singing in the rain, I don’t know the classic movie. I mean, this was in the 50s? Way before our time, right? But, if you enjoy a good musical with high energy choreography and polished dance moves, you WILL NOT be disappointed.
.
Watching Singin’ In The Rain, made me want to enrol my 6 year old son in tap-dancing classes and wishing that I’d taken dance classes when I was younger. The colourful set, the energetic dances all make for a breath-taking awesome theatre experience for young and old alike.

Colourful set and polished dance moves!

The happy trio of Don Lockwood, Kathy Selden (BETHANY DICKSON) and Cosmo Brown (STEVEN VAN WYK) charmed us with slick tap dancing as well as beautiful singing!

Singin' In The Rain

I was totally swept away by the beautiful voice of BETHANY DICKSON from the moment she sang Good Morning! It was one of my favourite songs in the musical. Bethany played Maria in The Sound of Music! If there needs to be another reason to watch Singin’ In The Rain, it’s to enjoy her stellar performance again! The hubs loved the comedy and laughed throughout the musical. His favourite song pick was Moses Supposes, which was a really fun tongue twister number between Cosmo Brown, Don Lockwood and his Speech Tutor.
.
The highlight of the musical is definitely the iconic Singin’ In The Rain song and the famous rain scene. I must admit that I was more than curious about the Rain coming to live on stage! 12,000 litres of water (recycled) on stage! How is it done? Well, you’ve got to see it live on stage to believe and you WILL BE AMAZED!

Singin' In The Rain

Here’s a video of DUANNE ALEXANDER‘s defining Singin’ in the Rain Scene taken during the media call earlier in the afternoon. It was more than awesome, watching him tap dance away in the rain as he sang and splashed the audience with the rain… hahaa!

Splash Alert!

This is probably the only time when front row seats at a musical are not ‘ideal’ because the first four rows are splash zones! Hahah, still the audience had a really good time. Everyone put on their ponchos gamely and were ready to duck when the splashing came! The rest of us behind them gave our support by bursting into laughter each time DUANNE ALEXANDER gave a hearty kick at the water! LOL!

Clean up in progress… Do you spy the ponchos? LOL!

It took a good 20 minute interval to clean and dry up the stage after the scene! I am left wondering how many suits and pairs of shoes does Don Lockwood go through for a week’s performance. Not forgetting the finale scene with a whole cast Singin In The Rain!

Love the awesome finale scene!

So yes, Singin In The Rain is a spectacularly enjoyable show packed with charm, romance, comedy and tinseltown glamour. We’re really glad that we got to enjoy a classic come to life on stage and experience the awesome dancing and breath-taking Singin In The Rain scene.
