{Giveaway} Glowtape Productions’ The Great Wall: One Woman’s Journey| 14 – 30 JULY 2017

Glowtape Productions presents The Great Wall: One Woman’s Journey from 14 – 30 July at the Drama Centre Theatre.

The Great Wall: One Woman’s Journey is a spectacular musical adaptation that transforms Meng Jiang Nü’s tale into a soaring musical odyssey. Raw emotions are laid bare in a dazzling display of vocal showmanship as the characters come to life in a beautiful contemporary setting detailed with traditional design influences.

TGW_keyvisual_port_SMOL_Page_1

Captivating and profoundly moving, this production weaves a gripping tale of love and courage against an epic backdrop of imperial China. In the face of insurmountable odds, a young everywoman does not yield to her fate. What unfolds is a passionate display of a woman’s resolve as she stands alone against the ultimate symbol of unbridled hubris and power.

Join the phenomenal Na-Young Jeon’s Singapore debut, multi-talented George Chan and homegrown singing sensation Nathan Hartono as they team up this July for The Great Wall: One Woman’s Journey.

TGW

No wall too tall.
No journey too long.
The legend of Meng Jiang Nü.

Behind the imposing façade of The Great Wall lies one of the most enduring legends in Chinese folklore – the story of Meng Jiang Nü, whose tears brought down the Great Wall.

This original musical with brand new script by acclaimed Singaporean playwright Jean Tay, who won best original script for Everything But The Brain and authored Boom, both literature texts in schools, is led by an international team of artists – featuring composer David Shrubsole (National Gallery Singapore’s Opening Festival, London Road) from the UK, helmed by Australian director Darren Yap (Man of Letters, Miss Saigon, Mamma Mia!), and starring talents from the West End – Dutch-Korean actress Na-Young Jeon (Les Misérables, Miss Saigon) and Monique Wilson (Miss Saigon, The King & I), along with George Chan (Chicago, December Rains) and homegrown singer-songwriter Nathan Hartono, fresh from his stint on Sing! China.

The Great Wall: One Woman’s Journey is a musical not to be missed! We can’t wait attend this amazing new musical in July. Book your tickets early at SISTIC and get the best seats before it is a Sold Out performance!

The Stage is Calling ~ Casting Calls for Little Ones | 29 Dec 2016

If you have a talented little one with a dream to take the stage and be a star, here’s an opportunity to do it with a stellar theatre company, Pangdemonium!

Pangdemonium is casting for their production FUN HOME!
Pangdemonium’s “FUN HOME” is holding auditions on 29 December 2016 for three child roles.

fh-audtions

Getting cast in this Tony-winning Broadway musical could be a dream come true for any young musical theatre actor!

The casting call includes protagonist Alison Bechdel’s youngest stage incarnation and her two child brothers: Christian and John.
For those unfamiliar with this coming-of-age hit…

.
CHRISTIAN is the oldest Bechdel child. Young male actor aged 10–12.  JOHN is the youngest (age 7–9), and described as being full of energy and having a quirky imagination.

Both roles call for a young singer-actor with a natural sound, good sense of harmony, and pitch.

.
YOUNG ALISON (age 9-11) holds much more heft in the show than her two stage brothers—original cast member Sydney Lucas earned a Tony nomination for the role, after all! She’s “on the cusp of finding herself and forming her own views on how a girl her age should behave and dress”. We are looking for a young girl who is both confident and intelligent. The right candidate’s singing abilities will require moving “seamlessly in vocal quality from speech to song” and a range of B to B.

* Please note that in the story, SMALL ALISON is considered a “tomboy”, and becomes aware that she is not like most other girls her age. She sings a song “Ring of Keys” (https://youtu.be/pMAuesRJm1E) about this growing awareness, but otherwise does not understand, much less know how to act upon, what she is sensing. It is not until she reaches her late teens (MEDIUM ALISON) that she dares to come out as gay.  With this in mind, auditionees (and their parents/guardians) have to be comfortable with the subject matter of the story.

Performers of all ethnic and racial background are encouraged to attend.

Suggested Activities for Aesop’s Fables

I Theatre's Aesop Fables

Last weekend, we watched I Theatre‘s Aesop’s Fables at Jubilee Hall, Raffles Hotel.  Read about our review and introduction to Aesop’s Fables here. We found out the 8 story titles shared with the audience in the children’s production.  With the initial 4 that we were already aware of before the show, we went home to flip through our bookshelves and got ready for some home activities that may be fun to do with the kids. We were really glad to find resources from Homeschool Share blog, sharing the related links below.

This year, don’t forget to collect your copy of Programme Booklet at I Theatre ‘s Aesop’s Fables before show starts!  Activities for the little ones have been included within. R was having a little fun time on the train on one of the days after school last week.

Androcles & The Lion  ~  Gratitude is the sign of noble souls

R is an emerging reader who is still trying to find confidence in reading proficiently as well as the stamina in reading a longer story.  Theatre-watching brings out the stories live for kids and makes books more interesting.  We always try to make it a point to read up and to do some craft work wherever possible so that our kids will enjoy learning.  Here in the video, is one of the session where we got R to read on his own.  He is reading the title “Androcles & The Lion”, one of his most favorite stories.

The Goose With the Golden Eggs ~It isn’t good to be greedy

Suggested Activities

Goose Paper Craft (link)  :  This is a simple cut and paste paper craft of a goose.  The craft is good “just for fun”, for a bird theme, or for a farm theme.  You can make the craft into a handprint craft by replacing the template wings with traced handprints if you like.  Suitable for 2-4yo.

Story-telling with Puppets (link)   :  Just print, cut and stick them onto ice-cream sticks for a quick story-time!Suitable for small to young children.  Here below, we did our story-telling with a golden balloon filled with water.  And R as the Goose, had some fun trying to “lay” the egg.  LOL

The Goose That Laid Golden Eggs

The Goose That Laid Golden Eggs

The Wind and the Sun ~ One can accomplish more with kindness than with force

Suggested Activities

Q : If you wanted to get someone to do something, how would you get him/her to do it?

Q : When have you used kindness instead of force?

Q : How does it feel when someone uses force on you to get what he/she wants?

Watch YouTube

The Fox and the Crow ~ Do not trust flatterers

Suggested Activities

Lapbook Making : Download and print the file from Homeschool Share.

Q : How did the Fox trick the Crow?

Q : Was the Fox being honest?

Q : What is flattery?  And how is it different from compliments?

I Theatre's Aesop Fables

The Lion and the Mouse ~ A Kindness is never wasted

Suggested Activities

Lapbook Making : Download and print the file from Homeschool Share.

In this story, children reflect on keeping promises and doing favours.  They also learn that size doesn’t matter when it comes to kindness.

Q : Have you ever felt too small to help?

Q : Are there any advantages to being small?

Q : Do you feel good after a kind act towards others?

I Theatre Aesop Fables

Nobody is too small to help!

General Knowledge About Mice :   We watched a video about a mouse gnawing on wood.  And we shared that mice needs to gnaw on something all the time because their teeth grows faster than ours, and they need to control the length of their teeth.

The Jay and the Peacock ~ It’s not only fine feathers that make fine birds

Suggested Activities

Science :   Do a themetic study on Peacock.  National Geographic provided us some useful and quick information on Peacocks that is not too difficult for kids above 5yo to understand.

Role-Playing :  Here, we recycled Chinese New Year (CNY) decorations to act as peacock feathers.  These CNY decoration is basically done using looping chain method with red packets (angpow).  Is our tail pretty??  R (acting as Jay, the bird), looking on at the Peacock’s fine feathers and wishes for the same for himself.

{Review} The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Farewell KidsFest 2015

We caught the finale show of KidsFest 2015’s The Tiger Who Came to Tea two Sundays ago. Strangely, despite us having watched many of the excellent KidsFest productions in the past, neither of us had watched this fun play before.

Having heard excellent reviews from friends who had been to the play, the kids were all set to have fun.

K, Wey & R with glowing smiles, set to watch The Tiger Who Came to Tea at SOTA!

The cast surprised everyone as they entered the theatre from the sides and mingled with everyone. It was delightful that Sophie was dressed exactly like the way she was in the book, even Mummy had the familiar green dress on!

Hello Everybody! Thank you for coming to our play…Wow! And the show starts now! Yay!

With loud excited bursts of ‘Hi’s, the children greeted the characters of The Tiger Who Came to Tea, eagerly. The cast broke into song and dance getting lots of response to sing along. “Hello… Thank you for coming to our play… Thank you for coming to our theatre…”

With a tick-tock tick-tock, Mummy got the show rolling.

Are you ready? “A ring at the door… who could it be?”

It was a treat, to meet the milkman and even the postman, the children laughed so hard at their silliness. The build up of excitement to finally have the Tiger come through the door was wonderful. Everyone kept shouting “The Tiger! The Tiger!” And yes, he finally came at 4 o’clock! Teatime! LOL!

So yes, the Tiger did come to tea. Imagine! Seeing the great big orange stripped tiger appearing on stage, really made the classic by Judith Kerr so believable! With squeals of delight, Wey shouted “The Tiger! The Tiger!” along with all the other children alike.

The Tiger, though he did not speak or roar, was comical yet majestic in his manner. And yes, he ate and he ate! He ate up all the sandwiches, all the biscuits and all the cake until there was nothing left on the table… until there was nothing left in the saucepan… until there was nothing left in the fridge or the store. He ate up everything in the kitchen. LOL!

Empty plates! No more sandwiches, no more biscuits and … no more cake soon! LOL!

And of course, he drank all the milk in the milk jug, all the tea in the teapot, all the strawberry milkshake, all the orange juice and even Daddy’s beer, and yes, all the water in the tap (how is that even possible?) as well! hahaha oops!! Much to the delight of all the children of course!

I loved the magical stage props that must have caught the imagination of every child there. The food and drinks all seemed to miraculously disappear as the tiger ate them.

K and R’s favourite part was the Tigerobics part where the audience were asked to join in to “Swing your tiger tail, shake your tiger paws, stretch your tiger paws, roar your tiger roar… Bounce and bend and bounce and bend!” We loved the spontaneous catchy songs that made audience participation so fun. K, Wey and R were dancing as they sang with the cast, “Yummy yummy sausages, scrummy scrummy chips, yummy scrummy taste so good! Yummy scrummy I love sausages and chips and ice cream …”

For KidsFest fans, here’s something else… I think I recognise the actress acting as Sophie. I’m quite sure she’s the actress who acted as the clever little mouse in The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child! Wow! I loved her then, and I love her even more now!

The Tiger Who Came to Tea is definitely a wonderful show to go with young ones for the energy, the vibrant catchy songs and the spontaneous fun. Don’t miss it next time it comes to town.

Just like it was sad to say goodbye to the Tiger after he had tea, it was a sad goodbye for us as KidsFest 2015 came to an end after a wonderful run of 8 productions this year. Although the Tiger did not come back again for tea, we are certainly glad that KidsFest will be back again next year! KidsFest 2016 yay! Thankfully!

{Review} Fun at I Theatre’s Aesop’s Fables

If you were asked whether you knew any of the stories that Aesop told, chances are high that you would be familiar with at least one or two.

I Theatre’s Aesop’s Fables opened at the Jubilee Theatre, Raffles Hotel last Thursday offering audiences a total of 8 Stories packed in 50 minutes of absolute fun.

The scene opens with Crowfoot Troupe getting ready to tell Aesop’s stories to the audience, except that one of them forgot to bring all the stage props and so they had to improvise and the audience must therefore use their imagination because “This is theatre after all!”

The talented and funny Crowfoot Troupe are ready to tell you Aesop’s fables!

We were very fortunate to be seated in the 3rd row, unblocked, and had a full view of the action.

Wey, R and K all set to enjoy I Theatre’s Aesop’s Fables together!

When one of the theatre troupe members asked, “Did anyone see my cheese?! Where is it?” She immediately caught our reaction when we pointed to indicate that her cheese was near us. She came forward to look for it and had fun teasing K, Wey and R. The kids were thrilled and I was really impressed that the cast actually worked the reactions and exclamations of the audience into the show.  Definitely, thumbs up for the superb spontaneity and great audience interaction of the talented cast.

The Miller, his Son and the Donkey

We had a good laugh at the funny antics of the Miller and his son, as they tried to please everyone that they met, until he finally lost his donkey! Indeed such a valuable lesson for both young and old, that “when you try to please everyone, you end up pleasing nobody!”

The Fox & The Crow

This is one of the kids’ favourite tales about the crafty fox who used words of flattery to convince the crow sing with her beautiful voice! All the fox wanted was for her to release the piece of cheese in her mouth… and as it was the crow succumbed to the praise of the crafty fox and lost her precious cheese.

One take away we had, was to teach our children not to believe in the flattering words of others especially strangers.

The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs

“The goose that laid the golden eggy…. getting very rich” … “he has killed the thing that brought him riches…” … The cast wooed us with catchy music and singing in this all too familiar story of the greedy farmer who killed the goose that laid the golden eggs because he was impatient and wanted to get rich all at once.

I appreciated that the visual of the goose being killed was delivered in a dramatic yet comical manner instead of being morbid or scary, highly suitable for a young audience!

The North Wind & The Sun

We’ve always loved I Theatre’s shows for the high level of audience involvement and interaction. Aesop’s Fables did not disappoint. In the story of The North Wind & The Sun, two brave volunteers were asked to come on stage, one to represent and cheer for the Wind and the other for the Sun.

It’s definitely a great experience for young ones to be called on stage to participate, not only because it’s a memorable theatrical experience but it also boosts their confidence. Imagine having a whole theatre of people watching you on stage! A rare opportunity indeed, plus the volunteers were given goodie bags too!

The Lion & The Mouse

Again, the vivid and animated acting brought this story to life and I even spied one member of audience holding her breath as the little mouse tried to rescue the lion.

No one is too small or too weak to do good! Wow! what an encouragement to our young ones, hopefully K, Wey and R caught this valuable lesson to know that they have it in them to do good even though they are so young (and small! LOL!)

Androcles & The Lion

This final story was probably our favourite not only because of the captivating music but also the local humour injected within.  It was funny to see how Androcles performed an “operation” on the Lion to save him! And I wouldn’t spoil the fun for you by telling why!

150225-3284

Androcles! Androcles! ….

All the stories were presented in a light hearted fun interactive way. The songs, which were catchy and easy for little ones to follow had us swaying to the beat in between bouts of laughter.  I still find myself humming the tune “Aesop Fables, here to tell you things that you should already know…” 🙂

Other stories presented include The Jay & The Peacock and The Sheep & The Wolf.

Never swap your friends for your enemies! ~ The Sheep and the Wolf

Because there were 8 stories to tell, the pace was also quick, so reading the stories beforehand with the kids would really help their enjoyment of the show. Wey was able to anticipate and interact with what was happening on stage because we’ve read most of the stories presented. I could tell he thoroughly enjoyed every story.

Some favourite Usborne readers that we re-read before going to Aesop’s Fables.

We really like the I Theatre Programme given out at the show. If you are early, there’s an opportunity to show your children some of the cast’s profiles plus there are some fun activities to engage them in whilst waiting for the show to start. Don’t forget to pick up a copy and read it with your little ones.

Aesop’s Fables Theatre Programme ~ Fun! Fun! Fun!

We’ll also be blogging about our Aesop’s Fables home learning activities with the kids, be sure to follow our blog for updates. Stay tuned!

It’s always rewarding to hang around a little longer after any I Theatre show because the cast would usually appear for a brief photo opportunity. Queues form quite quickly but the cast is always very accommodating and will patiently pose for photos with everyone. So make sure you don’t rush off or you’ll miss that one more photo for the album! Here’s ours!
