{Giveaway} SRT’s 三只山羊 The Three Billy Goats Gruff ~ Share to Win a Family Package worth $192

Have you heard that Singapore Repertory Theatre’s The Little Company is staging The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff in Mandarin from 18 February – 26 March 2016?

It was such an enjoyable treat to watch the hugely successful brand new English production of The Three Billy Goats Gruff last year (Read our review here), that the children are really looking forward to watching this play again, but in Mandarin this time. Super Yay!

1446635913230

I’ve always been on the look out for fun Mandarin activities to engage Wey to spark his interest in the language. Having been to the Mandarin versions of TLC’s 金发姑娘和三只熊 Goldilocks and the Three Bears and 丑小鸭 The Ugly Duckling, I’m pretty sure The Three Billy Goats Gruff will come out making Mandarin an accessible fun language for the kids through hilarious dialogue, creative storytelling and catchy music!!

Meet “Baby”, “Middle” and “Big”, the Three Billy Goats Gruff with their forgetful almost silly caretaker, Little Bo-Frilly as they look for grass that always seems greener on the other side, especially now that they are in the middle of a dreadful drought! Together, the gang decide to cross the bridge to the other side of the valley, where lush green grass awaits. Yummy!!!

But wait! Hold on a minute! Below the bridge lives a frightening troll that (gulp!) loves to feast on goats (not kids! Phew! no worries haha)… Can they outsmart the monstrous greedy troll?

1446635915354

Don’t miss this rare chance to get your little ones immersed in Mandarin whilst having fun.  If you haven’t already gotten tickets yet, do hurry as the last I checked, tickets are selling out fast for weekend shows! You can book at SISTIC http://www.sistic.com.sg/events/billy0416 now.

We’ve got a Family Package of 4 tickets worth $192 to watch The Three Billy Goat’s Gruff《三只山羊》on 27 February 2016, Saturday at 2PM  for Giveaway!

{Review + Giveaway} 50 Metres : Our Swimming Pools

I first got to know of the book launch for 50 Metres : Our Swimming Pools through Facebook.  As I was scrolling through the images, one particular quote caught my eye.

10308350_953204054723410_8799348063284444572_n

Wow, I didn’t know that!  No wonder we have so many swimming pools in Singapore!!  Thank you Mr Lee, for I grew up with one of the oldest and deepest pool at Taman Jurong.  Swimming was one of the few lessons in schools I really enjoyed.  My childhood friends and I loved the 12-ft deep pool, 2-tier springboard and life-saving swim lessons there.  By P3, I was one of the the able swimmers in school and always managed to snag a few trophies and medals during my school’s swim carnival.  It’s a pity that the Jurong Town Swimming Pool has closed down in the past decade.

50 Metres : Our Swimming Pools is a joint effort by Jocelyn Lau and Lucien Low, with beautiful illustrations by Favian Ee.  The book commemorates the heritage of Singapore’s swimming pool and the book launch is timed with Singapore’s 50th year of Independence.  50 Metres : Our Swimming Pools is a 128-page full-colour paperback that contributes to the preservation of collective memories by 56 residents of Singapore.  Do you have your own story to tell?

Drowning

Going further back into memories, I nearly died when I was 5 years old.  The baby pool at Jurong Town Swimming pool was an impressive size of 25m length x 10(?)m width with long steps at the shallower end for entry.  I “very cleverly” removed my cumbersome swimming ring as it appeared that I could reach the floor tiles everywhere I went.  Haha!  Why need the float?!!  The next thing I knew, I was struggling trying to reach the floor and catching my breath.  Had my dad not been watchful, I would have died that day.  I remember I cried alot.  Since then until P1, I had a phobia of water until my mum decided to send me for proper lessons (despite my resistance).

Childhood

My siblings and I spent countless years at Jurong Town Swimming Pool.  Even after we had achieved GOLD certificate, long distance award (I once swam for almost 4 hours during one of the trials to complete 5KM), life-saving certification, we would be at the pool every Saturday evening for “free swim class”.  Back then, our beloved swim coach loved to order a 20-lap whenever he spots us at the pool and we would obediently oblige before we enjoy water play.

20151006_093011r

Yes, this is how the main gate of Jurong Town Swimming Pool looks like!

Food

There was a Chinese Restaurant that sold dimsum and old school big round glass jars of cookies.  After every swim lesson, mum would buy each of us a piece of cookie and a cup of Milo.  My favourite was the Walnut Cookie – crispy, fragrant and buttery.  Strange, but I seem to be able to recall the exact taste even though it’s been 20-30 years.

Dog

My family once took in a stray dog.  It’s name is Puppy and he had the most affinity with my brother.  Puppy would follow us to the pool and wait at the gate.  Every staff and life guards at the pool knows Puppy is our dog. ❤  He even knows he must wait for the Green Man before crossing the traffic light junction across Corporation Drive.

All the above are some of my fondest memory of Jurong Town Swimming Pool.  So, what’s your story?  Would you like to share?

Collected in 50 Metres : Our Swimming Pools are stories of the new, old and those pools that are no longer serving the public.  The stories are from people who used the pools at one point of their life or another.  Pool staffs and lifeguards shared their own stories too.  It’s an endearing read and also very interesting to find out how the swimming pools have actually changed people’s life.  Published by Kucinta Books and supported by the SG50 Celebration Fund, 50 Metres : Our Swimming Pools is a keeper and is totally wonderful and meaningful.

Old Pools

Here is another peek into the other swimming pools which I thought would recapture some of your memories too.

New Pools

50 Metres : Our Swimming Pools also includes the current new pools with all the happening splashes, slides and lazy rivers.  These pools provided a totally different experience and lifestyle for one and all.  Our kids will grow up with a whole new set of fond memories of their own!

20151006_093144r

Jurong East Swimming Complex – the first of all water theme park in Singapore. I remember the terror wave pool and powerful jets of water sprayed into the air. But I don’t remember this circular slide (above). It’s time for a return but not sure if it’s been reopened from recent renovations.

20151006_093155r

Jurong West Swimming Complex – to many, this is a swimming pool with very cold water!  The pool deck is located above the ground floor carpark and is at least at the height of 3-4 storeys hence, more windy.  There are two full-sized adult pools, one of which has a shelter over it which I have never dared to enter due to the water temperature.

20151006_093238r

The kiddy area has an impressive size with a tall and long slide, very long lazy river and lots of water splash area.  This is enough for a whole morning of fun!

{REVIEW & GIVEAWAY} : How Long Is Eternity?

How Long Is Eternity?

is an adaptation from the famous story of “The Shepherd Boy” by the Brothers Grimm.  In The Shepherd Boy, it tells of the fame and wisdom of the boy who gave wise answers to every question and  eventually got to live with the King in the palace and looked upon by the King as his own child. When we received How Long Is Eternity? from Wild Crane Press, we were captivated by the beautifully-formatted book in hard-cover concertina style and it also comes in a slipcase.  The book, when fully opened, measures more than 2.5 m long.

Untitled

Dual book cover

This book is written and presented in a unique four-direction format.  Each time we read this book with the kids, we found it amusing and had lots of fun.  Personally, I am worried that the kids will tear the precious book due to rough handling.  So I made sure to keep the book immediately after each read.

…….

The Intro

…….

The King asked the shepherd boy,

‘How many seconds are there in eternity?’

The shepherd boy replied,

‘In Lower Pomerania, there exists a diamond mountain.  This mountain measures two miles in height, two miles in breadth, and two miles in depth.  Every hundred years, a bird will come to the mountain and sharpen its beak on it.  By the time the mountain has been worn away completely, the first second of eternity will have passed.’

20150206_092134_resize_20150206_113034_0

The tree on which the bird resides.

How Long Is Eternity? is a bilingual book but doesn’t come with the mess of having both the English and Chinese texts squeezed onto the same page.  The text layout doesn’t fight for space with the illustrations at the same time too.  The English version is printed in monochrome, on one side of the book.  One reads it from front to back, by which time the little bird would have reached the diamond mountain to sharpen it’s beak. One then turns the book upside down to continue reading back to the first page, where the little bird sets on it’s journey home after having it’s beak sharpened, and reaches home at the first page.  The Chinese version 《永恒有多久》 is printed on the reverse side of the book in rich, full colour.  It brought on a totally new reading experience compared to the English version.

20150206_092238_resize_20150206_113032_0a

L : English version R : Chinese version

The kids have never seen a concertina book before and found it very amusing.  They also liked the illustrations being linked from one page to the next, with few pages combined to make one scene.

20150206_092158_resize_20150206_113034_0-1

One of the scenes where the bird braces itself against lightning and stormy weather on it’s way to, and back from the diamond mountain.

We have been holding onto this title for coming 3 months.  And couldn’t decide how best to review this special format book.  Finally recently we decided to do a story-telling on video so as to capture the true essence of the beauty in this book.  Pardon my not-very-sweet-voice because K refused to do the story-telling for me on video 😦 http://youtu.be/Z96R5vYdGsQ The story is probably tough to understand for smaller children.  They equate 5-min wait to eternity when it is actually a state of timelessness.  Even as an adult, I often sense such feeling too. Despite being not able to understand the story well, the illustrations had however, brought the story to life for the little ones who so ever enjoyed story-telling from mummy me.

《小狼系列》书评 · 送礼 The Wolf Series (Mandarin) REVIEW & GIVEAWAY

Peter Pan, The Never Ending Story

Sunday was finally the day to catch the much-anticipated musical showcasing “Peter Pan, The Never Ending Story” at the Resorts World™ Theatre, Resorts World Sentosa.  We bought our tickets the day it was launched as there was a fantastic promotion with HSBC credit card allowing card users to get free ticket upgrade.  Basically, we got seated at Cat 1 with Cat 2 price plus early bird discount.  All 13 of us (mummies with kids) went for the musical today while the daddies chill out at Cedele.

20141221_160047_0

20141221_171001_0

Peter Pan, The Never Ending Story is a timeless story filled with adventures of the mischievous boy who can fly and refuses to grow up.  One night, he visits Wendy, John, and Michael Darling in their London nursery and takes them on a magical flight to Never Land where the Lost Boys, Indians, mermaids and pirates await them in adventures beyond their wildest imaginations.  The story of Peter Pan lives on in every one of us who is still a young at heart.  Though we grow old, there is always this sense of youth in us whenever we come across this story.

As this is a 2-hr musical (with 20-min intermission) staged for audiences aged from 4 year old to as long as you feel young, the content has skewed towards adult maturity rather than keeping it simple for young children.  I heard lots of questions from the 4-5 year old child behind me.  My 5 year old son doesn’t know much about what is happening too except knowing the key characters, the excitement of acrobatics and flying performance, and the pyrotechnics used.  He was mesmerized throughout.  However he needed me to explain to him about the plot as the show progressed because when i asked him question about certain scenes, he would reply with “why” without moving his eyes off the stage.  However the bunch of 7 year olds (K and her play mates) could enjoy the story as well as adults.  Because K sat with her besties while I sat with R, I tested her after the show and found that she had digested what she watched pretty well.

In her own 7-year old words,

1.     Peter Pan

Peter Pan did not dress up like in the story book.  He also did not put on make up on his face.

1.     Injuring Wendy

In the story, Peter Pan banished Tinker Bell for a week because Tinker Bell asked the Lost Boys to shoot down Wendy with stones.  Tinker Bell told the Lost Boys that Peter Pan gave the instructions.  Wendy was injured while flying in the sky.

However in the musical, Peter Pan banished Tinker Bell forever and locked her up when he found out that Tinker Bell instructed the Lost Boys to shoot down Wendy with arrows.  One of the arrows shot Wendy in the heart and everyone thought that she was dead.  But she did not die because of the acorn necklace that Peter Pan gave to her.  She woke up soon after.

2.     Mermaid Lagoon

When Peter Pan went to the Mermaid Lagoon, he actually had brought along Wendy with him.

But in the musical, Peter Pan did not do so.  And just like Tinker Bell, the Mermaid was jealous of Wendy in the musical because Peter Pan gave all his attention to Wendy.

3.     Tinker Bell

In the musical, while Peter Pan was sleeping, Captain Hook concocted a poison that would make Peter Pan die if he drank it.  Tinker Bell saved Peter Pan by drinking the poison herself and she died.  Everybody had to save Tinker Bell by believing in fairies, even the audience.

However what happened in the story was, Captain Hook had prepared a bomb hidden inside a present for Peter Pan and it said “To Peter, with love, from Wendy.”  The bomb would blast Peter Pan out of Never Land forever at 6 o’clock.  Tinker Bell had escaped from Captain Hook’s prison (the glass lantern) and managed to save Peter Pan by snatching the present from him before he can open it.  And she did not die too.

20141221_165825_0

4.     Ending

Wendy fell asleep by the window when she returned from Never Land, not on her bed.  The End.  (meaning she doesn’t want to entertain me anymore with all these spot the differences between her story book and the musical.  hehehe)

I was glad that K was focused on the musical despite whispering and giggling to her friends (especially when The Boys were on stage with all the acrobatical act.  All of us were happy to watch the story unfold scene after scene.  I have enjoyed the entire musical tremendously as well.

The musical is staged via the narration of Tinker Bell.  There were minimal verbal exchange throughout the show.  Many scenes used pop songs to bring out the mood.  Familiar songs like “You Raise Me Up”, “Forever Young”, “Kiss From A Rose” were cleverly arranged to tie in with the story line.

My favorite scene would be when Peter Pan brought Wendy to the waterfall.  The backdrop was simply beautiful and it felt so romantic at the moment.  Another was pretty much to the ending when Tinker Bell was raised from the verge of death after drinking the poison that Hook concocted.  It was then that she first appeared as Tinker Bell the fairy instead of being represented by a small light flying all over stage in the hands of the other actors.  I loved the pixie dust she dusted over all at the front rows.  I believe my 5 year-old R was also mesmerized by the fairy dust too.

20141221_170852_0

20141221_145506_0

Enjoy your childhood and please don’t grow up too soon, my little ones!  Me too, I want to be forever young.  Can I, just for tonight and perhaps, every night??

For those who are keen to catch the show, Peter Pan, The Never Ending Story will be featured at Resorts World™ Theatre, Resorts World Sentosa from now til 20 January 2015 with the following show times :-
Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri: 8pm
Sat & Sun: 3pm & 8pm

It’s worth to bring the kids.  Do catch it soon!

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY : CREEPY MATHEMATICS

Recently when we visited the cozy office of the Wild Crane Press, we were treated to a delightful hour-long introduction to some of the books published by them.  It was a pleasure to meet and talk to Rayne, who is also an author / editor of some of the books presented to us.

Wild Crane Press is a Singapore-based publisher that works with overseas companies in the adaptation of foreign children’s literature and translates them into beautiful stories easily appreciated by little children.  They have worked with publishing houses from France and Korea and reproduced several international children’s best-sellers here.

One of the series that quickly caught our attention during the meet-up is the Creepy Mathematics series.  This is a 5-book hardcover set that features the adventures of a little Vampire boy, Flappy, and well, Mathematics!

Little Flappy and his friends, Wrappy the mummy, Clacky the skeleton, and Breezy the spectre, attends night school called the Monster Kindergarten.  Through their adventures in school written in a language level appropriate for kids aged 5 to 8, kids get to learn about Mathematics in 5 broad topics, namely, Length, Volume, Area, Weight and Estimation.

One of our favorite titles in this series is New Coffins for a Growing Vampire! where Count Dracula lost his temper because the carpenter wasn’t able to make a new coffin of the right size for his growing son, Flappy.

New Coffins for a Growing Vampire

Oh, why is that so?  As we read on, we later discovered that everybody used their own feet to give measurements to the carpenter.  And since everybody has feet of different lengths, the carpenter wasn’t able to produce a new coffin that is just the right size for Flappy!

New Coffins for A Growing Vampire

New Coffins for A Growing Vampire

We love that these 5 books present mathematical concepts in a funny but engaging way. The illustrations are beautiful and engaging though nothing creepy as the series title suggests.

There is also a section at the back that summarizes the story and teaches parents how to replicate the story into real-life hands-on fun.

20141115_202835

It’s no secret that kids appreciate concepts better if they are able to touch & feel for themselves.  And it’s great to know that we need no fanciful manipulative to replicate the lesson at home!

Another title that we enjoyed reading is The Magic Juice where the creepy kids each brought their favourite cup from home to the kindergarten.

The Magic Juice

When distributed with a ladle-ful of magic juice, they ended up with seemingly different amount of liquid in their cups!  We’re sure mummies with 2 of more little ones can relate to this “unfair treatment” at home.

20141115_211119

The Magic Juice

The Magic Juice deals with the concept of Volume (for Liquid).  Mummies can help the little ones to understand volumetric measurements at home by first trying to compare different amounts of liquid in identical containers, rather than in containers of different shapes and sizes.  Then, just like in the story, put the same amount of liquid in containers of varying sizes and let the little ones see the difference for themselves!

At home, we first poured one ladleful of water into each of the four containers we found in the kitchen.  We used transparent ones so kids will find it easier to look at the amount of water from the outside.

The Magic Juice Experiment at Home

The Magic Juice Experiment at Home

The kids unanimously agreed that containers of different shapes and sizes hold “different” amount of water.

The Magic Juice Experiment at Home

The Magic Juice Experiment at Home

However when we poured in the same ladleful of water into R’s milk bottle with measurement on the outside, they could read that the volume of water is 70 ml.  To further prove it,  we emptied the water inside the milk bottle, and had the kids each pour the four containers of water into the milk bottle.  And they are surprised to find out all the containers (that is to say, the ladle) has 70 ml of water in them.  Now, we took the opportunity to explain that LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING!  So pls!  Don’t always complain that mama is UNFAIR okays!

The Magic Juice Experiment at Home

The Magic Juice Experiment at Home

We love these stories and believe that you would have as much fun reading this set of books with your little ones.  Aside from captivating illustration drawn using the computer to the effect of natural watercolour feel, the text is written in an easy-to-understand level for kids 5-8yo, with nice big fonts.
