{Media Invite} The Great Wall: One Woman’s Journey|A Night of Stunning Vocals

I was so looking forward to go to The Great Wall Musical at the Drama Centre Theatre with the hubby on Thursday night (especially since the kiddo was finally done with his Math Mini- Test).  Date night finally! Away from the crazy homework and mini-tests schedules!

The Great Wall

Part of the excitement was also because it’s been such a long time since we’ve hit the theatres, and what a good one to start with. A brand new original musical based on a beautiful love story with a stellar cast! I was excited to get to see Nathan Hartono sing live on stage too! It was no wonder then that even on a week night, this musical was playing to an almost full house!

TGW

Set in the time of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of China, who wants to create a new history, a new One China united under his rule, the musical is based on the legend of Meng Jiang Nü (played by Na-Young Jeon) whose devotion and love for her husband Fan Qi Liang (Nathan Hartono), sends her on a long and arduous journey in search of him after he is captured by the Emperor’s guards to work at The Great Wall.

GreatWall

Behold the Great Emperor of China

The opening scene with Emperor Qin(played by George Chan) is grand and sets the tone of the times~ where fear of this great tyrant prevails throughout the new One China. The dramatic effect was perfect, with the Emperor perched up high against the dark backdrop.  We were transported immediately into those fearful tyrannical times where everyone’s existence is for the pleasure of one man- the Emperor.

GreatWall7

The Emperor commands that all males be conscripted to build his Great Wall and all scholars be killed!

I think it safe to say that every single person in the audience was moved by the singing of Na-Young Jeon. She was amazing. Her voice crystal clear and beautiful. Her singing lifted our spirits as she found love and fell sweetly and deeply in love to runaway scholar Fan Qi Liang. We felt her misery, her helplessness and desperation when her beloved was arrested and taken away by the Emperor’s Guards. We wanted to run with her and journey with her as she went in search of her husband to see him again. Na-Young Jeon made Meng Jiang Nü real… our sister in a desperate situation. (I hear Ethel Yap’s performance as Meng Jiang Nü is equally enthralling)

GreatWall5

The beautiful lovebirds

I really enjoyed watching the two well matched lovebirds on stage. Nathan Hartono did not disappoint. Handsome as he sang away to melt our hearts (hahah) but a pity I felt he didn’t seem to have as many singing parts as I had hoped. In fact, I have a nasty suspicion that his air-time was far lesser than the Women in the Village!! But then again that could be just me? If only there was more of Nathan and Na-Young… the night would have been perfect! haha..

Even so, every song in this 2.5 hour long musical was delightful with stunningly good singing.

GreatWall6

The Women in The Village / Mother / Women of China take up quite a fair bit of the musical, unfortunately.

The set and costume were simple yet beautifully designed and each scene was an artistic visual treat.

I especially remembered a scene of Meng Jiang Nü’s journey which required an amazing display of precision and teamwork, as the villagers laid out the wooden planks for Meng Jiang Nü, who walks and climbs on each plank. As her journey progresses, it is a stunning visual.  Perhaps, through this repetitive act of laying out the pathway for Meng Jiang Nü, the audience also experiences the difficulty and the long journey she took.

GreatWall3

Truly a great display of No wall too tall. No Journey too long… Meng Jiang Nü’s arduous journey in search of her beloved.

The Great Wall Musical is a powerful love story of one woman’s undying love and determination to be with her beloved against all odds. But it is not just a love story, it is an amazing story of human strength and tenacity despite immense suffering … A story about bravery and courage to stand up for what you believe in, and remain unyielding in spite of ruthless tyranny.

The Great Wall Musical runs from 14 -30 July 2017 at the Drama Centre Theatre, so there’s only one more week before it ends, next Sunday. Do catch it even if it’s a week night show.

The hubby gave it a thumbs up and has been telling everyone (who has asked us) that it’s a must watch. I agree 🙂 This is truly a Must – Watch Musical for 2017. Take a well deserved break from the mundane and be transported into another time, another world, another love. Book quickly at SISTIC https://www.sistic.com/events/cwall0717 before tickets are totally sold out! Have a lovely time with The Great Wall Musical!

I Theatre Back With Immensely Popular Poultry Tales, With A Peep Into Backstage This Time

We kind of miss theatre-going with the kids after many months of busy days with our respective house-renovation, moving, then school.  The kids have been repeatedly asking for some edutainment.  The last one we attended was the amazingly impressive season finale – I Theatre’s The Magic Paintbrush which left us all awed and inspired by the talented uncle Brian (Seward).

Both Audrey and I love musicals since young and we love how I Theatre shows engage the kids, as well as the adults.  It is definitely not easy to edutain an audience with a large age differences at the same time even though the performances are primarily targeted at the children.  We always leave the theatre with meaningful conversations with the kids after the bonding over a staged musical.

In case you don’t know who the sparkle behind I Theatre shows is, it is Brian Seward, a veteran Artistic Director who has been with I Theatre for more than a decade.  Just last month, Brian marked his 16th Anniversary with I Theatre.  We also found out that before coming to Singapore, he taught Drama in schools.  This means that he has dedicated a large part of his life to children theatre and arts.

PTT017 Portrait 10x15

Come 27 April to 14 May 2017, join us at the Drama Centre Theatre, NLB, for an extravaganza of children theatrical favourites to the tunes of The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs, and her greedy owner; The Little Red Hen, with bread to bake, but lazy friends; and Chicken-Licken – with that scary acorn!

This talkative trio of feathered friends will sing, dance, show and tell you their tales – and don’t be surprised if they share some valuable wisdom and backstage secrets on the way.

A brand new, interactive, fun, musical production presented in quite an unusual way.  This time, we’ll get to look at the world of the Theatre Stage from the inside out and discover valuable secrets of how a Musical is made!  Poultry Tales looks set to be a visual and sensory treat for the whole family.

The play will explore key themes of:

  • Cooperation,
  • Rewards for hard work,
  • Knowing who to trust,
  • Disbelieving rumours,
  • The Dangers of Avarice
  • The dangers of judging others
  • How a theatre play is staged, and the roles of backstage crew.

Guaranteed to engage young and old alike, specially designed with excitement, humour and learning points coming thick and fast!  We are really excited and has marked our calendar for the show.  Tickets can be purchased at SISTIC Website if your family love theatre-going learning journeys like ours.  Stay tuned to us, for we have a surprise coming up very soon!

White Lotus Seed Paste with Prized Karasumi & Angelica Baked Mooncakes and Aged Old Pu’er Tea Set NEW 乌鱼子当归白莲蓉月饼和 陈年旧普洱茶具 新 $188nett

I tried this exquisite one of a kind mooncake and it is really special!

img_1640

It packs in a nutritious mix of sweet and salty tastes from the Angelica(herb tonic) and Karasumi but are not overpowering and it’s no wonder why Wan Hao has selected this as a premium mooncake. The unusual ingredients especially the Karasumi (salted mullet roe) had my family guessing what was that very special taste! Quite simply said, it was a delight to try.

Snowskin Mooncakes

I always look forward to the creative snowskin mooncake offerings by Wan Hao because the chefs never fail to surprise and delight! This year’s creations include:

  • Chocolate Brownie with Cookies & Honeycomb (New)
  • Salted Caramel with Peanut Praline (New)
  • Pure ‘Mao Shan Wang’ Premium Grade Durian (Signature)
  • Sencha Green Tea with Japanese Red Bean
  • White Lotus Seed Paste with Egg Yolk

Salted Caramel with Peanut Praline Snowskin Mooncake NEW

This flavour was totally my favourite and the hubs agrees! I love salted caramel and this combination was yummy… almost familiar too … hehee it was like a snicker bar mooncake! Such a great combination of sweet and salty crunchy sensations, what’s there not to love, so satisfying! Simply a Must try! 🙂

Chocolate Brownie with Cookies & Honeycomb Snowskin Mooncake NEW

Chocolate lovers will love this interesting creation! Imagine yummy bits of chocolate brownie ganache sprinkled generously in white lotus seed paste plus honeycomb at the core, and you will know why this choice will be irresistible for the sweet tooth! Tempted yet?

Traditional Baked Mooncakes

The health conscious and weight watchers will be happy to know that the flavourful mooncake jewels created by Chef and team are all low sugar, with no added preservatives or artificial flavouring. Overall I honestly liked that Wan Hao’s lotus paste was not overly sweet, just right! So mummies can indulge in their favourite mooncakes and share these traditional delights with little ones without worrying 🙂 At least I did! hehe…

{Review} Cha Siu Bao & The Big Bad Wolf! The Three Little Pigs 2016

SRT The Three Little Pigs

We have been sharing our review for all the children’s musicals for which our kids had the benefit to enjoy without lifting a finger.  Over the weekend, we were thankfully given a chance to take a break from busy renovation works and school life, not to slack in front of the TV, but to catch the return of The Three Little Pigs by SRT’s The Little Company.  If you have not already known, The Three Little Pigs came back to Singapore after having huffed and puffed around the world (in various languages) at major cities in USA, Australia, UK and China.

pigweb_16

Since I already maximized my brain cells over everything at my new house, I took this opportunity to request Jiejie to do the review on my behalf and she gamely chose to review the musical over her past year papers.  Smart one! (Oops, I mean myself.  Hahahhah!)

I found that the various book reviews she has done for Times Bookstores Junior Book Review Club have given her some warming up to writing tasks at home.  She usually does not like to write but can do reading marathon.  We share the kids’ book reviews at our Instagram account @sayshappymums. I encouraged her to write a simple one with the hope of getting a chance to catch Charlotte’s Web in Oct ’16 if she writes properly.  And so here, a very simple write-up from a 9-year old piglet’s point of view.

Title : The Three Little Pigs (Children’s Musical)
Presented by : SRT’s The Little Company

Yesterday, I went to watch The Three Little Pigs with my mother and brother.  It was held at the KC Arts Centre – Home of SRT.  When we entered the theatre, I was excited but not for the first time as i had already watched it for a few times.  We were the first few to get into the theatre.

The show started on time and it was more interesting than the last one I watched.  My most favourite part was when the wolf jumped into the hot pot of stew and did not listen to the pigs warnings and ended his own life.

At the end of the show, I felt very happy because it was an enjoyable musical.  I learnt that as a family, we must always stick together and help one another.

Everyone should go and watch it as it is a lot of fun.  It will continue until 16 Sep 2016.  Be sure to watch it!

Thinking back to 2012 way before we started our blog, we first caught The Three Little Pigs and were already deeply captivated by the endearing “tails” with comical acts and hilarious lines.  When the musical was adapted into Mandarin version a year later, we wasted no time in booking our tickets.  Once again, we were not disappointed. I remember the Mandarin version was quite difficult to understand for my then 6 and 4 year olds.  They nevertheless stayed entertained to the lively music and rolled through the musical together with the piglets without once complaining that the performance was in Mandarin.

SRT The Three Little Pigs

This year, The Three Little Pigs returns with three superstar piglets – Cha, Siu and Bao, their devoted single-parent Mum, and the Big Bad Wolf who is just a little bit misunderstood.

SRT The Three Little Pigs

The amazingly funny lyrics, affectionate use of Singlish and catchy tunes in this musical appeals to everybody from 3 to 100 years old.  I personally loved Big Bad Wolf’s performance (by Ivan Chan) tremendously.  The audience engagement with Wolf was magical and super fun!  Ivan really played his part of the bad wolf very well.  Children went howling mad over the wolf’s huff and puff, chased the piglets around and finally, dropping down the chimney into the boiling pot.

SRT The Three Little Pigs

Like what Jiejie has mentioned, don’t miss this!  The show runs until the end of Term 3 school holidays so there’s no excuse to miss it!

Thanks to Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT), we are grateful for the opportunity to watch The Three Little Pigs with complimentary tickets for purposes of reviewing the production. We were not remunerated monetarily for the review, all opinions and experiences remain our own alone.  All photos unless otherwise mentioned are copyright of SRT’s The Little Company and were provided for the purposes of this review.  All other photos remain the copyright property of SAys! {Tickets Giveaway} CBeebies’ Mister Maker & The Shapes Live in Singapore

Mister Maker Live

When our kids were smaller, they would always be happy with a show by CBeebies’ Mister Maker.  Both of us don’t normally allow the kids to simply watch TV for the sake of occupying their time.  We selectively pick shows to engage them with, with the hope that while they get entertained, they can learn something useful as well.  We are most glad that Mister Maker, the art and craft wizard on TV will teach and entertain them in the most fun and imaginative ways through the use of shapes.  Now that Wey and Didi are officially primary school kids, they still fondly remember the wacky Mister Maker and are actually enthusiastically looking forward to his arrival.

If your child/children has/have grown up watching Mister Maker shows on TV, we are most pleased to announce that their favourite arty-crafty uncle, CBeebies’ Mister Maker, will be making his first ever live tour and he will be coming to Singapore from 10 to 12 June 2016!  With a fabulous supporting cast and art at its heart, this fantastic live show encourages Mini Makers and grown-ups to sing, dance and make some noise.

Mister Maker Live

During this interactive live show, there’s a big ‘make’ to take part in, lots of audience participation and….The Shapes! Yes, the kids will be able to share the fun with Circle, Square, Rectangle and Triangle too!

Mister Maker is the ultimate arts and craft show for pre-schoolers and early primary years which teaches and entertains in fun and imaginative ways. He is a real life character who gets his inspiration to make art from everything and anything around him.  Set in his own fantasy art room, he collects the required things from the Doodle drawers as he creates and makes pictures, objects and other things come to life. Join in with him as he then wakes up the shapes to perform a song and dance together. Mini Makers can catch also Mister Maker on CBeebies (StarHub Channel 303) daily from 10am to 10.40am.

[Giveaway] Aviva Superfundae 2016 | Get Connected, Active and Creative Through Play!

Aviva Superfundae 2016 Giveaway Banner

We first heard of Aviva Superfundae last year from friends who attended the carnival.  This year, we regrettably have to give it another miss as it clashes with our other commitment again.  Nevertheless, read about the event and we have something nice to share with everyone at the end.

Happening at The Meadow, Gardens by the Bay on 4 June 2016, Aviva Superfundae calls for families to kick-off the school holidays with some quality play in the great outdoors. With more than 30 games and activities spread across five thematically-designed zones, Aviva Superfundae encourages learning as well as parent-and-child bonding through Connective Play, Active Play, and Creative Play.

This is play at its best where participants get to interact and connect with one other; hone their psychomotor skills from outdoor quests, water-play and dashes (Double Daddy Dash for example); unleash their creativity with hands-on arts and crafts activities.

Read about Mary’s recount of fun from last year’s event.  Our top-picks for this year would be :

  1. Mega Candy Cannon where free Haribo gummies will be blasted out of a candy cannon every hour
  2. Craycrayspray Water Play where you battle it out with Nerf Super Soakers
  3. Numakiki Jungle Obstacle where a parent-child team navigate through a super fun circuit that puts both the brains and motor skills to the test.

Take a look at the video from last year which displayed how much fun there was!

Key highlights at Aviva Superfundae 2016

  1. CIRCUS CENTRE
  • If you have always dreamt about candies falling from the sky, Superfundae will make that dream come true with the Mega Candy Cannon! We kid you not, free Haribo gummies will be blasted out of a candy cannon every hour! Sugar rush guaranteed!

Daddy can also opt to drag the kids around in Daddy Donut Dash. If Dad is still up for it, he can swoop Mum off her feet and dash through the Daddy Mommy Piggyback.
  • Adults, treat yourself to a beer at the Beer Dash once you’ve made a run for it. Kids, fret not, a 60m Milk Dash is just round the corner steady hands and fast feet required.
