Ever since we sported Princess Fiona along Orchard Road looking for Shrek, we’ve also been eagerly looking forward to meet Shrek at Shrek the Musical at the MasterCard Theatres, Marina Bay Sands!
The kids and I love all the Shrek movies and it was such a treat to be able to go to the Opening Gala of Shrek the Musical tonight! They were excited to be there, and I was trying my best not to show my own child-ish glee at being there too 😛
Based on the Oscar- winning DreamWorks Animation, Shrek the Musical lives up to its animation film forerunner, Shrek. Expect to laugh at everyone’s favourite ogre on stage and fall in love with his love story with feisty Princess Fiona, all over again.
Fall in love again at them Falling In Love!
I think nobody walked out of the theatre that night without being smitten by the feisty Princess Fiona. Lindsey Dunn, who plays the adult Princess Fiona, surprised me with her powerful melodious voice as she sang effortlessly! Gotta love a spunky Princess! haha!… All of f the 3 Princess Fionas – the child, the adolescent, the adult , were amazing. The talented little girl who played the young Princess Fiona was so impressive!
I was thrilled to see my beloved Donkey on stage! haha! He was amazing and hilarious! Every bit as funny and delightful as Donkey in the familiar Shrek movies! Absolute must watch – this straight shooting non-stop talking Donkey!
Although everyone instinctively dislikes Lord Farquaad, I think I loved him in this Broadway Musical! haha he was a comic relief and really quite hilarious to watch. Wey was amused and wondered how they could find such a short person to play Lord Farquaad until he finally realised that the man was kneeling on his knees throughout the entire musical! Oouch! But BRAVO and TWO THUMBS UP to a magnificent performance as the hateable villain!
A very short hot tempered Lord Farquaad!
We were all entertained endlessly by the singing and the dancing at Castle Duloc!
Special mention must be made of the beautiful stage and sets. The costumes were exquisite and beautiful, every imaginable detail from the movie is recreated live on stage. One sits in the Marina Bay Sands Mastercard Theatres and feels the glitz and glamour worth of Hollywood even before the curtains rise.
The elaborate and detailed costumes realistically brings to life the fairy-tale creatures! Wey exclaimed out loud excitedly, “MUMMY!!! It’s Pinocchio! Look the Big Bad Wolf and look at the Three Blind Mice!” He was in awe. I was absorbed in the fairy-tale before me. There really is just one word – Shrektacular hit! Totally not a cliché. Totally enjoyable!
I think I heard everyone gasp when the fire-breathing Dragon (that Shrek is supposed to slay but who eventually becomes Donkey’s love) appeared! The sheer size of Dragon was magnificent and awesome! Everyone laughed at Donkey‘s banter and charm as he distracts and changes her mind to somehow fall in love with him!
Wey was at the edge of his seat (even though he knows the story so well and has watched the movie a million times) as the wedding scene came on. The little one was ‘still worried’ that Lord Farquaad would marry the Princess and Shrek would have lost his true love forever. But we all know what happens… it’s just fantastic to see it happen onstage… the transformation of Princess Fiona happened at a blink of the eye, and Wey was left wondering how did they do it.
Will Princess Fiona find her one true love and kiss to take her true form?
It was the perfect pre- birthday treat for Wey who turns 7 in June. That night, he turned to me before falling asleep and said sweetly, “Thank you Mummy! I loved the show tonight! I love you very much, Mummy.” (excuse my heart melt!) But he spoke from his heart, we both had a great time at Shrek the Musical.
