Octoburst 2015 ~ What Fun Is Happening At Esplanade??

#Notsponsored

It was perhaps last year when we first encountered aMaze me at Octoburst!  aMaze me was a free sensory activity which allowed children to tie lengths of ribbon around a huge space.  The result was an ever-changing art form and maze through which the children can navigate around.  The fun was so memorable that we tried replicating the game at home but not too successful due to space constraint and lack of supporting frames to tie the ribbons on.

This year, Octoburst! will be back with another run of fun-filled three-day weekend full of mesmerizing performances, engaging workshops and amazing amount of free activities over the Children’s Day weekend at the Esplanade’s Octoburst! – A Children’s Festival.

Between 9th to 11th Oct ’15, Esplanade will run both highly-subsidized ticketed and free, non-ticketed programmes / activities that the entire family can enjoy together at Octoburst!.  All events are targeted at children between the age of 2-12 yo.  There will be THREE (3) ticketed performances to look forward to, THREE (3) enriching parent-child workshops, and countless free performances and kid-friendly activities being held over the weekend.  Also taking place during Octoburst! is the wildly popular Colouring Fun and On-the-spot Drawing Contest on the first day.

We have taken some effort to compile all the events / activities that will be happening during Octoburst!.  Unfortunately both of us will not be able to attend or review any of the events compiled here as it clashes with other pre-scheduled events and likely celebration of didi’s birthday.  Nonetheless, we hope that you will find this list clear and useful.  Remember to have fun!

CASA (Ticketed Event)
By La Baracca – Testoni Ragazzi (Italy)

01 Casa

Synopsis :-

Casa. Home – a place where I can be myself.

A home is a place where I live, share experiences and welcome others.  A home is where I explore and invent a place, which changes as I change.  A home is a place from which I leave to discover everything outside of it and a place to go back to every day.

Casa tells the imaginative story of a grown-up and a child who meet, get to know each other and start to build. Building turns into play, and little by little, they build a story, a structure, a roof, a house. Sometimes the little one pretends to be the grown-up, while the grown-up pretends to be the little one.

Be a part of Casa, where simple movements come together to build a home bursting with imagination.

VISUAL ARTS
Ra Ta Ta Tum
by Nathania Zaini and Lim Shu Ning

For some children, the whimsical world of performances extends beyond the conventional stages. The conical nature of the Theatre Cones suggest the big tent under which houses the circus – which often sits in a liminal space between imagination and reality.

Ra ta ta tum invites audiences to step beneath the big top. The work is a collection of hanging soft sculptures that celebrates the colourful circus stage, and ties in with Esplanade as a leading arts venue for performing arts.

Local young visual artists Nathania Zaini and Lim Shu Ning will be creating soft sculptures in our Theatre Cones to help our children jump through more imaginative loops as they glance up into the cones above them, and upon these circus characters.

Each cone would house a company of circus characters surrounded by a scattering of geometrical abstract shapes hung suspended. The characters include jugglers, acrobats, the strong man, the lion, the elephant, the snake and birds which would be sewn up from fabric. These characters will hang from fishing lines and painted poles (to represent acrobatic hanging bars) and jump through rings or hoops (made from rubber hose tubing covered with fabric).

The circus is sits in a liminal space between imagination and reality. Audiences are imbued with a sense of child-like wonder as tricks are presented and seemingly impossible acts happen in front of disbelieving eyes. In the same way, Ra ta ta tum hopes to transport visitors to a whimsical world that celebrates performing arts.

  1. I didn’t realise there is so many activities happening at Esplanade. But Alas…. my 2 children having their examination during that period. But I’m keen on the Doodle City!!

  2. I’ve missed the past few years of Octoburst because it usually clashes with my son’s birthday and birthday party! But this year it’s a week later – hurray! I’m planning to bring my daughter to watch the ballet. She just started learning and I think she will enjoy it.

  3. Okay, that’s too many things for one month. I saw the poster for this in my boy’s school and the poster only featured a fraction of these activities! Kudos to you for digging them all out.. otherwise I would be missing out! The Mini Mash-ups look interesting.
