PianoBotanica – A night of Brazilan music with Duo Bastos & Borges

After two very successful editions, the free concert-in-the-park PianoBotanica will be back to celebrate the friendship between Brazil and Singapore on the latter’s 50th year of independence.

This year, fronting the concert in the park is Brazilian Duo Bastos & Borges, who have performed across the globe for many years. The duo comprises flutist João Bastos and pianist Yara Borges, both of whom received classical training at top music institutions in Europe. They have performed extensively across Europe with a repertoire of both classical and popular Brazilian music, and performed in Singapore in 2013 upon invitation by the Embassy of Brazil.

The light and airy sound of the flute and the rich and grand tone of the piano are well-suited for classical tunes and also Brazilian songs. Concert-goers can certainly expect a broad array of musical experiences as the two musicians are able to combine the sophistication and exuberance of Brazilian music with masterpieces of classical repertoire in an elegant and fluent manner.

SSO Concerts for Children : Roald Dahl’s “Jack and the Beanstalk”

Based on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhyme, Jack and the Beanstalk by Dandi Productions features a cast of four actors, outrageous puppets and a stunning 60-foot beanstalk, which rises from the stage to the ceiling in a matter of seconds. There’s still a cow, a giant and an ambitious boy with a pocket full of beans, but in Dahl’s telling of the tale, getting rich depends on getting past the giant’s highly developed sense of smell. With a 45-minute orchestral score by Latvian composer Georgs Pelécis, this wildly entertaining concert-story provides for plenty of unexpected twists, and a constant parade of inspired theatrics.
