We moved to a new place in April this year and I was of course needing brand new bedding. It was a coincidence that Shirley came across an interesting pillow product for children at that time and she was very keen to try it out and I was game to do so too.
Although the hubs and I both own support pillows by another brand, it’s never crossed my mind to consider getting one for the little one. Thinking about it, it was really quite necessary. The pillow that Wey had graduated into after going through all the numerous baby pillows was an ultra flat adult cotton pillow. It probably lacked the support that he required. (Read: GUILTY Mum).
Now, having read rave reviews about Sofzsleep® pillows, I was keen to try it out although I was at the same time a little sceptical about whether we could find a solution to some of his sleep issues by a mere change of pillows.
Here are some of Wey’s sleep issues:
1) Interrupted Sleep throughout the night
Wey has never been able to sleep through the night quite well since birth. When he was younger he would wake almost every hour in the night and some people even told me it was my breastfeeding. I think not. And as time would prove it, he continued his habitual waking way after I stopped breastfeeding. It’s improved a little since he was 5 years old, in the sense that he has stopped waking for night feeds but he still has restless sleep at times.
2) Frequent Blocked Nose
More often than not, Wey suffers from frequent blocked nasal passage when he lies down to sleep. This is a constant irritation for him and some nights it gets so bad that he wakes up crying because he can’t breathe properly. Of course, the crying aggravates the blockage.
3) Grinding Teeth
What’s worse is his grinding of teeth! Wey habitually grinds his teeth in his sleep and sometimes with so much force, I worry he’ll break a tooth or two. Although I’ve asked his doctor if it’s stress related or if there’s anything I could do, I didn’t get an answer ~ basically, I was given the impression that he will hopefully grow out of it.
4) Perspiration
Along with these bad sleep issues, Wey perspires so much in his sleep that his hair and pillow get quite wet in the night despite sleeping in an air-conditioned room. Some tell me it is because he drinks formula milk??!! I have no idea the causes and really who knows the reason! We’re all guessing at best.
So after receiving our brand new Sofzsleep® Junior M pillow, we got our bed set up in the new place. You can see the contours of the Sofzsleep® Junior M pillow, it’s not too high so it’s just the right height support for the little one.
I like that all Sofzsleep® pillows come with an outer pillow covering which gives it a nice finishing touch and is made of fabric that has been thoroughly washed, processed and tested to comply with the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100. This makes pillow cases unnecessary and solves the problem of finding pillowcases that fit.
Having said that, I still prefer to use an additional pillow case of our own and I simply half the pillow case to make it fit well.
Now, fast forward 3 months after using his first contour Sofzsleep® Junior M pillow, these are what I’ve found.
1) Cool and Healthy Sleep
I’ve always thought that latex material aka rubber is warm. I could not be further from the truth!
Sofzsleep® uses 100% premium grade rubber sap from S.E.A rubber plantations shipped directly to their manufacturing plant in Belgium. And contrary to my misinformed belief, Latex’s open cell structure made up of millions of tiny interconnecting microscopic cells actually helps ventilate and rid moisture.
Wow! And it’s quite proven from my personal experience these past months. Over at the new house, Wey doesn’t wake up drenched in perspiration as he did previously in cotton pillows. I no longer have to worry about his half drenched upper body causing him chills in the air-conditioned room.
2) No More Blocked Nose
I’ve come to realise that at the new house, Wey doesn’t suffer the issue of blocked nasal passage when he sleeps. However, when we go back to my mum’s place on and off, it recurs! Just this past long weekend, he woke and cried for over an hour because he couldn’t breathe properly and had such a hard time going back to sleep on his old cotton pillow at my mum’s place. Arrgh!!
My only conclusion is that the contour pillow actually does provide adequate raised support for his neck and therefore the occurrence of blocked nose does not happen when he uses the Sofzsleep Junior M pillow at our new home. The contour design cushions the head and cradles his neck to provide comfortable support throughout the night.
I am also inclined to think that the natural antibiotic and dust mite resistant properties of the latex material have a part to play as well. The antimicrobial properties ensure an allergen and toxic-free sleeping environment, resulting in possibly a clean and healthier sleep, sans all the irritating blocked nose problems!! (Read: SUPER HAPPY Mum)
3) A More Restful Sleep
Perhaps because of the cooler sleep environment with the latex material and the raised support that solves the blocked nose issue, Wey has been having a better sleep now at the new house. Of course, there are nights when he still wakes in the night, but these are more due to a nightmare or dreams rather than the issue of being drenched from perspiration or having a stuffy blocked nose. I am thankful! Wouldn’t you be?
4) Durability and Continued Good Support
Another plus I’ve found is the pillow keeps its shape and doesn’t flatten over time! I’ve been changing pillows for Wey ever so often since he was a baby because we’ve always used cotton ones that go flat so quickly even with repeated fluffing. To me, it makes all the difference that the Sofzsleep pillow retains its structure and continues to provide the good support that it was built for.
For Wey, the contoured pillow has yet to eradicate the problem of teeth grinding. That’s perhaps an issue that has to be outgrown or solved another way.
I personally wish that the Junior M Pillow was longer so there would be more room for the little one to make a full turn. But Wey isn’t complaining about the size. He loves it! He calls it, his ‘cute pillow’. The next size up would be the Contour Pillow which is 65cm instead of 50 cm but at a height of 9/11.5 cm versus 7/9cm of the Junior M. Perhaps we will upgrade to that size soon.
Happy night times makes a happy mum! There’s nothing I love more than to stare at my little one when he sleeps soundly, and it’s what all mums secretly enjoy! I’m glad he got to enjoy that little luxury of a contour support pillow that’s non-toxic, clean and durable.

Hi Candy,
Nothing is 100% cure. We would be bluffing you if we tell you this is the cure. Shirley’s kids enjoyed the soft plushy, yet very firm pillow. R will still grind his teeth occasionally esp if he has played very hard the whole day. What we love about the pillow is the good neck support that we all need as we grow up or grow older. Hope this helps and sorry we missed your question. 🙂
