{Review+Giveaway} Run! Run! So You Can Catch I Theatre’s The Gingerbread Man!

This afternoon, we literally ran all the way up to Jubilee Hall at Raffles Hotel to catch The Gingerbread Man.  It’s been quite some time since we had to run for a show.  Thanks to Audrey’s constant reminder, I have learnt to be at least 20-30 minutes earlier than the stated time in order to settle down and make myself comfortable before show starts.

To cut the long story short, I had only 8 minutes to spare before the performance starts.  But then oh, this short few minutes must have seemed like eternity for R who kept asking to check the time.  And then he has to entertain my requests to take photographs, as well as a chat (more like Q&A session hahahah) with a preschool teacher seating next to him.  Surprised that this time, he doesn’t need me to nudge him to answer to somebody else’s questions!  I guess having a pretty lady talking to him helped alot!  Anyway, he just couldn’t contain his excitement to see The Gingerbread Man live on stage and would do anything to oblige.

As for K the bookworm, she has picked up the habit of reading the programme booklet and biography of the production team this year.

Cookie-lovers ALERT!!

With the 2nd-time return of the improved The Gingerbread Man (2015) since it was first presented in 2009 followed by 2013, the show is sure to capture the hearts of our little ones with more theatrical fun, audience interaction, props and costumes.  The show started with a story telling session by the Storyteller who couldn’t find his storybook.  When he finally found it (through the help of the little audience of course!), everyone in the audience already had a full minute of great laughs.  At every dance, the little audience would clap along to the music without prompt.  That, is really the most truthful accolades for the actors on stage!

“If you want to avoid a disaster, you must follow the rules.”

The story is about gingerbread cookies and a recipe for disaster.  Once upon a time, there lived a Little Old Woman and a Not-So-Little Old Man who do not have any child of their own.  They were dreaming of a child whom they can love and protect.  The use of a feather duster as their pretend-baby and the kitchen towel as baby-wrap cracked me up totally.  What an ingenius use of props! Hahahah!  Anyway, in order to materialize their dreams, they then decided to make a gingerbread child.  Now, what happens when Bert, the Not-So-Little Old Man is impatient and not good at following instructions?

What do you do when you are short of an ingredient when you want to bake??  You simply put off the baking until you have everything ready right?  Well, but Bert does not think so!  Apparently he approves of using flower to replace flour (it’s not pronounced as “flah” by the way huh!), water in the flower vase to substitute the milk stolen by cat, honey that got stuck and torn off his pocket, and goodness gracious me, chilli powder in replacement of ginger spice powder!!  What a recipe for disaster…..LOL!

Find out what happens for yourself when Bert did not follow his wife’s rules to bake a gingerbread child.  Through the clever use of simple but wonderfully catchy songs, be prepared to groove and clap along with the actors on stage.

We were brought through the hills and valleys in the show and the hilarious encounters with Horse, Cow, Cat, Dog, Duck and finally Fox.  Both K & R enjoyed the show tremendously.  The show ended with the moral message ~ “When one wishes for something he/she does not need, or should not have, just be very careful with it.  For it must just turn out to be a bad thing.”  And also remember, if you do have a missing gingerbread child, you just need to go around doing the taste test on every child you come across.  *Eeeww*  You might just be able to find him, provided that you run as fast as you can!

With strong moral values and interesting thinking points for both young and old alike, The Gingerbread Man is set to be the most yummilicious treat for all ages!
