As we age and become mothers ourselves, we fully appreciate the hardship our mothers had gone through when they had us in the 70s, the selfless sacrifice for us when we were going through tough period during our different growing up phases. Even til today, my mum is still making sacrifices for me at the slightest cue of my call for help. During my wedding reception, I thanked my parents on stage without the need for lengthy speech. I didn’t prepare for any speech but felt like saying my thanks. I couldn’t say a word more, for I was already on the brink of tearing already. It was a memorable night and I’ve never thanked my parents formally before, not to mention doing it in front of > 500 guests. But every word in that one sentence was expressed sincerely & whole-heartedly which I still hold in my heart for the past 11 years. I merely said,
“Daddy, Mummy, 谢谢你们。没有你们，我今天不会站在这里。“
As with every Mother’s Day, the F&B industry will present their Mother’s Day promotion. Aside from dining, cakes are probably the next item to purchase as part of the celebration. It was by coincidence that we came to know about Swensen’s unique creation for this Mother’s Day, the Heart of Youth cake.
Beautifully encased in pink piping jelly with a pearl cream outline resembling the elegant pearl necklace, the heart-shaped cake comes complete with a delicate adornment of intricate sugar flowers and a white chocolate crown as a perfect symbolic creation of affection for our beloved mother. The Heart of Youth cake is a symbol of love that not only tastes decadent with its winning flavor blend of Vanilla with Chocolate Fudge chunks, for it comes infused with a healthy dose of Marine Collagen as well.
We have all heard of collagen and it’s benefits. But just what’s with the collagen?? Apparently collagen can help our degenerating skin to improve skin texture and firmess. To a certain extent, it also can help to reduce wrinkles. Aside from popularly known to contribute to hair and nails renewal, collagen seems to also improve tendon & joint flexibility and strength. It is no wonder some girl friends around us constantly rave about collagen-rich natural food, drinks, supplements & skin care products.
From the medical point of view, I guess it does seem true that collagen has it’s benefits. When my dad had his an ankle operation due to fractured bone last October, there was a period of time when the skin around his surgery cut was taut and shiny. Though not wrinkled like an elderly’s skin should be, it was due to the swell underneath that caused it. During his medical reviews, his doctor had asked mum to cook food that is rich in collagen like oily fish, meat, tomato, berries as these food can help him with skin repair. Thanks to mum’s love and care with the support of my brother as well as dad having a strong physique for his age, the swell subsided in about 5 months and he has since made 90% recovery. Though he can walk unaided without any problem, we would always insist that he walks with an elderly walking stick.
This Mother’s Day, perhaps the Heart of Youth ice cream collagen cake from Swensen’s would be make a great gift to mum as a dessert after a heavy meal. Heart of Youth is priced at $51 (excluding GST) and no advanced ordering is required. Swensen’s members get 20% off listed price. The cake is available at ALL Swensen’s and Earle Swensen’s outlets from 23rd April to 10th May 2015 (while stocks last).
About Swensen’s Singapore
A household name in Singapore, Swensen’s is synonymous with sweet memories of good times spent with loved ones. Swensen’s first arrived in Singapore with the opening of a 200-seater restaurant at Thomson Plaza in 1979, and has since won the hearts of many with its warm, unpretentious ambience and a casual atmosphere. Over the years it has developed to become a restaurant chain offering not just ice cream, but fun and friendly casual-dining with a wide selection of hearty food, desserts, beverages, ice cream cakes and takeaway novelties. Today, Swensen’s has expanded to over 20 full-service restaurants serving an all-day menu of food and ice cream sundaes, and continues to bring people together for hearty meals and shared memories.
I reminisce about the days where my besties from secondary school and I hang out at Swensen’s Plaza Singapura outlet. And we will almost always order Fish & Chips with lots of Tartar Sauce, coupled with Fries on the Cones, and finish off our meal with an Earthquake in our favourite flavours. We are still besties right now and though not constantly in contact, our friendship has not changed. What’s your memory of Swensen’s?
